A Certified diabetes educator (CDE) is a health care professional specialized in guiding and teaching people with diabetes to manage their diabetes. In the USA, this certification is awarded by the National Certification Board For Diabetes Educators.
Credentials for becoming a CDE are strict. The candidate must be a RN, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician or podiatrist with an unrestricted active license. They can also be a dietitian a masters of social work, or an exercise physiologist. There are some other masters level programs that are accepted as well. The person must have 2 years of working with people with diabetes, and have 1000 hours of educating documented. The person must be working as a diabetes educator.
