Skin disease is a possible complication of diabetes, and is one of the many complications of diabetes affecting parts of the body like the feet, eyes, gums, heart, kidneys, and nerves.

Some of the skin diseases which may arise on account of diabetes are:

  • Bacteria infections: People with diabetes are prone to many types of bacterial infections, and these infections are caused by many organisms. Bacterial infections require medical treatment.
  • Fungal infections: Diabetic related fungal infection affects areas under the breast, corners of the mouth, armpits and groin, though it may affect any area of the body. It requires medical treatment.
  • Itching: Diabetes may cause itching on parts of the body. Generally it is localized, affecting a particular surface of the body.
  • Diabetic dermopathy: This is the result of diabetes adversely affecting the small blood vessels. Light brown patches appear on the skin. They mostly appear on the legs.
  • Necrobiosis Lipodica Diabeticorum (NLD): NDL is more or less similar to diabetic dermopathy. The spots are less in this case but of bigger sizes. If the spot cracks open, it is a cause of concern requiring medical treatment.
  • Atherosclerosis: This is the thickening of the arteries affecting mostly the legs. The circulation of the blood to the legs and toes are affected, and even small bruises take time to heal or may not heal at all until the diabetes in brought under control.
  • Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions may arise on account of medications or taking of insulin.
  • Diabetic Blisters: In medical terms, this skin disease is called Bullosis Diabeticorum. Diabetic blisters may appear on many parts of the body like the back of fingers and hands, sometimes on legs, toes, and feet.
  • Eruptive Xanthomatosis: In this condition, pea-like spots appear on the skin. The spots are firm and yellow, and may cause itching. These disappear once the diabetic comes under control.
  • Digital Sclerosis: In this condition, parts of the skin becomes tight, thick and waxy. In some cases, finger joints become stiff, and it becomes difficult to move fingers.
  • Disseminated Granuloma Annulare: The affected person gets ring-shaped or arch-shaped spots on the skin.
  • Acanthosis Nigricans: In this condition, tan or brown raised spots appear on the skin. They mostly appear on the neck, armpits, and groin.
